Mulberry Street branch
Old and new materials complement each other in the branch's building design.

The New York Public Library's Mulberry Street branch is located at the site of a former chocolate factory in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan, historically known as the Cast Iron District.

The branch entrance is located at ground level, with two floors extending under ground. A prominent staircase brings natural light downstairs, and the building is designed with respect to the existing infrastructure, history, and context. New materials, such as wood and metal, provide a dynamic contrast to the existing fabric of brick, cast iron, and heavy timber beams.

The branch houses a collection of more than 35,000 items. It has separate, cozy areas for children and young adults, as well as two large reading/working rooms for adults. There are 45 computers and laptops available throughout the building, and the multiuse community room hosts a wide range of educational and entertaining programs for visitors of all ages.
